Getting rid of an old refrigerator or freezer is a little different from other appliances, and it's worth knowing why before you drag it to the curb.
Why Freon matters
Refrigerators, freezers, and window AC units contain refrigerant (often still called "Freon"). Federal rules require that refrigerant be properly recovered by a certified technician before the appliance is scrapped — you can't just crush it. That's why fridges often carry a small handling fee for disposal, and why you shouldn't abandon one or leave it uncovered where kids or pets could get trapped inside (always remove the door if a fridge will sit out).
Your options
1. Utility rebate / recycling program
Some electric utilities run appliance-recycling programs and will even pay you a small rebate to haul away an old working fridge or freezer, because retiring an energy-hog appliance saves grid power. If your fridge still runs, check whether your utility (for many in our area, FPL) has a pickup-and-rebate program — it's the rare option that puts money back in your pocket.
2. Retailer haul-away with a new purchase
Buying a new fridge? The retailer will usually haul the old one away for a fee (or free) on delivery. Convenient if you're already replacing it.
3. Municipal bulk pickup
Your city may collect large appliances ("white goods") on a scheduled bulk day. It's low-cost or free, but you'll need to get the fridge to the curb, remove the doors, and wait for the pickup date. Check your city's rules — some require you to schedule it.
4. Junk removal / haul-away
The no-hassle route: a crew brings a dolly, walks the fridge out (down stairs and around corners), and hauls it to a facility that recovers the refrigerant and recycles the metal. Safety note: If an old fridge is going to sit outside for any length of time waiting for pickup, take the door off. It's a serious child-safety hazard otherwise — and in many places it's required by law.
