An old couch is one of the hardest things to get rid of on your own — it doesn't fit in a sedan, it's awkward through doorways, and a sectional basically requires a team. Here are your options, from most effort to least.
1. Sell it (if it's still nice)
If the couch is clean and in good shape, list it on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Craigslist. You might make a little money — but be realistic: buyers expect you to help load it, no-shows are common, and it can sit listed for weeks. Best for genuinely good furniture.
2. Donate it
Charities like Habitat for Humanity ReStore and others may take a couch that's clean and undamaged, and some offer free pickup for larger donations. Call ahead — most won't accept anything stained, torn, sagging, or with pet damage, and pickup slots book out. If it's in good condition, donating keeps it out of the landfill and helps someone.
3. Recycle it
A couch is mostly wood frame, metal springs, and foam — materials that can partly be recycled or diverted rather than landfilled. This usually happens through a hauler or facility rather than the curb. When we remove furniture, we donate or divert whatever still has life in it.
4. Curbside bulk pickup
Your city's bulk-trash program will likely take a couch on your scheduled large-item day. It's free, but you have to get it to the curb yourself (the hard part) and wait for the pickup day. Check your city's solid-waste schedule and rules before you drag it out.
5. Junk removal / haul-away
